Democrats won governor's races in three states that Republicans have dominated, led by Gina Hinojosa's defeat of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Texas

Hinojosa, a state lawmaker from Austin and a former school board president, led Abbott about 53% to 46% with 82% of the expected vote counted, according to AP figures reported by WORLD. The Boston Globe reported that Abbott conceded.

Abbott was seeking a record fourth term. The Texas Tribune noted that no Democrat had won the governorship since Ann Richards lost to George W. Bush in 1994, and Hinojosa will be the state's first Latina governor. More than 7.7 million Texans voted early, a modern record for a midterm, the Tribune reported.

Acton's win flips the Ohio governorship, the Boston Globe reported.

California

In California, former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, was called the winner of the governor's race, Forbes reported.

Thirty-six states elected governors in 2026. Results in several other contests were still being counted early on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
