Boston's cold-weather calendar runs from neighborhood tree lightings in late November to a new winter lodge in Copley Square and a Ferris wheel on the Greenway in February. Many of the signature events are free, and nearly all of them sit within a short walk of an MBTA station. This guide draws only on schedules posted by the City of Boston, Meet Boston, the state tourism office, the National Park Service and the MBTA.
What are the best free holiday events in Boston?
The city's Parks and Recreation Department runs a string of free lighting ceremonies, and the City of Boston has posted 2026 dates for several of them.
- Boston's official holiday tree arrival (Nov. 24): The tree from Nova Scotia is scheduled to arrive on Boston Common by police escort at about 11 a.m. The city says this is the 55th year of the gift, which honors Boston's aid after the 1917 Halifax explosion.
- Copley Square tree lighting (Nov. 30, 5–6 p.m.): This year's event doubles as the grand reopening of the renovated Copley Square Park, with a guided tour, crafts, Santa and performances, according to the city.
- Boston Common tree lighting (Dec. 3, 6–8 p.m.): Held near the Visitor Information Center at 139 Tremont St. The city lists Mayor Michelle Wu and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston as participants.
- Commonwealth Avenue Mall lighting (Dec. 3, about 8 p.m.): Right after the Common ceremony, lights go on along the mall from Arlington Street to Charlesgate, a project the city runs with the Friends of the Public Garden.
The city's events page also lists a trellis lighting at Christopher Columbus Park on Nov. 23 and the lighting of the ship at Martin's Park on Nov. 28.

- Frostival Lodge in Copley Square: Opens Jan. 22 and runs through the end of February. Meet Boston says returning features include trivia, bingo, live music, games and NFL and NBA broadcasts, with tea service, wine tastings, a full bar and literary events added this year.
- Ferris wheel on the Rose Kennedy Greenway: A 75-foot wheel opens in February and runs through April 25. Meet Boston has not announced an exact opening day.
