Trump says Democrats did "a good job," vows vetoes and blames some Republican candidates

The president said he accepts the results and was somewhat surprised. He faulted Gov. Greg Abbott and others, and said he would act as a pundit on why candidates won or lost.

President Trump congratulated Democrats on their midterm wins in calls and posts overnight from Tuesday, Nov. 3, into Wednesday, Nov. 4, while warning that he would veto the bills a Democratic Congress sends him.

What he said

  • He said Democrats did "a good job," the BBC reported.
  • He told The New York Times he was willing to accept the results and looked forward to working with Democrats, according to the BBC.
  • He told Fox News he was somewhat surprised by the outcome, the BBC reported, after calling into the network early on Wednesday, Nov. 4, according to Forbes.
  • He posted an image of a red cap reading "VETO."
  • He said Republicans would have won in a landslide if his name had been on the ballot.

Who he blamed

Mr. Trump said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott lost to Democrat Gina Hinojosa because Abbott had become a "RINO," a Republican in name only, the BBC and Forbes reported. He told CBS News that voters disliked some Republican candidates, whom he described as not his friends.

He also attacked Fox News on Tuesday night, saying the network gave Democrats too much coverage, Forbes reported. After the AP called the Senate, he wrote that he would become a pundit on why candidates won or lost.

What is next

The White House said Mr. Trump had no public events scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4, according to Forbes. The AP reported that his promise of $5,000 payments if Republicans held Congress now looks unlikely to advance.

Forbes noted that in October the president said he would accept the results "if they're honest elections."
